Using Contrast Agents and Medical Imaging Equipment

When a patient requires a test using medical imaging equipment, some doctors may request that a contract agent be used. Patients may not understand what a contrast agent is and why it is helpful when testing occurs in different types of imaging equipment.

What is a Contrast Agent?

A contrast agent (often simply referred to as "contrast") is used in different radiology testing as a way to help improve the visibility of different areas of the body during a test using imaging equipment. Depending on the type of test a patient is having, the contrast agent will vary. Mostly commonly, a contrast agent is used to enhance the visibility of the gastrointestinal tract and blood vessels.

While contrast agents are considered safe, there are always risks when any test or medical procedure occurs. While rare, risk factors for developing severe reactions include strong allergies, bronchial asthma, cardiac disease and beta-blocker use by the patient. All risks of using a contrast agent during a test with imaging equipment should be discussed between patient and doctor prior to the test so the patient is comfortable with the entire process. If a potential issue is identified during the discussion between doctor and patient, the doctor may choose to complete the test, but not use a contrast agent, due to a specific risk.

MRI Imaging Equipment and Contrast Agents

When a patient has an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), a contrast agent is often used to improve visibility of the body's internal structure. The most commonly used compounds for contrast are gadolinium-based, which alter relaxation times of tissues and body cavities when present. This agent will allow the imaging equipment to provide better detail of the body under examination during the test. As a result, the doctor can have a better overall picture of a patient's health or potential health issue.

The Importance of Medical Imaging

The use of medical imaging equipment is an important part of the medical profession's arsenal when it comes to identifying and treating a patient's medical issue or getting a better idea of a patient's overall health. To further assist the doctor, the use of a contrast agent can further assist in identifying potential issues and help develop a complete plan for the patient by the doctor.
