Is Used CT Equipment Safe?

One of the biggest questions a patient has when going for any test is "is this test safe?" While some tests are obviously less risky than others, a CT is extremely safe, regardless of the part of the body that is being scanned.

What is a CT?

Computer Tomography (CT) Scans were developed in the early 1970's. Since then CT Scans have been performed millions of times on patients to help doctors diagnose disease and identify injuries. Unlike the traditional X-Ray, a CT Scan can provide a multi-dimensional image of a patient. Since the 1980's, the use of CT Scans has become much more wide spread due to its detailed scan results, how quickly a scan can be completed and the reduced cost to complete a CT Scan.

Are CT Scans Safe?

While every medical procedure and test comes with some type of risk, the potential issues related to a CT Scan are quite small. Just like with any test, is a female patient may be pregnant, it is very important to let the CT Technologist and the doctor know this is possible so a pregnancy test can be performed prior to the scan. It is also important to stay completely still during the test. Because the test happens in less than a minute, most times, the test is done so quickly, there are very few potential issues related to the scan.

Is Used CT Equipment Safe?

Some hospitals and imaging centers utilize used CT equipment to complete CT Scans for patients. Many patients may be concerned that their CT Scan could be completed on used CT equipment . This concern couldn't be further from the truth. It is important to know that used CT equipment must adhere to the same strict regulations and guidelines as new CT equipment. As a result, there is absolutely no cause for alarm.

Regardless of whether new or used CT equipment that is in use at a hospital or imaging center, tests are regularly performed on all imaging equipment to ensure correct function and accurate results for all patients. Therefore, there shouldn't be concern on the side of the patient that their test results will not be accurate because the hospital or imaging center is utilizing used CT equipment .
