Used MRIs for Detecting Prostate Cancer

Used MRIs are effective for detecting prostate cancer. It is noninvasive and does not use radiation. Used MRIs are the best type of equipment for taking detailed images of specific parts of a patient's body to find the presence of diseases that may not be detected with other types of medical equipment.

What is Prostate Cancer and How Can Used MRI Equipment Help Detect It?

Prostate cancer is mostly diagnosed in men over the age of 50. It affects a gland in the male reproductive system, forming in the tissue of the prostate. While it does affect many men, it is typically a slow growing and treatment may not even be needed for some men.

The Procedure for Used MRI Equipment Detecting Prostate Cancer

Before the start of the exam, all personal items should be removed from the patient to avoid affecting the used MRIs. The physician will inform the patient of any dieting or fasting procedures prior to the exam. The patient may be asked to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the test. The exam may take up to an hour and a half to complete. During that time a few dozen images can be taken with the used MRIs. Unlike other types of medical equipment, used MRIs can find a tumor at the top of the prostate. This can be missed or not detected at all using other methods of examination. The procedure is virtually painless, but it may be uncomfortable to lie still for a long period of time. After the procedure is over, the radiologist will interpret the results from the images.

When Should Used MRI Equipment Not Be Used for Detecting Prostate Cancer?

There are some instances when used MRIs for detecting prostate cancer is not ideal. A doctor would advise a different test if other health issues in the patient would affect having a test done with used MRIs. Circumstances that would prevent a doctor from being able to test a patient with used MRIs includes medical conditions or medical or electronic devices inside of a patient's body. This includes severe acid reflux, claustrophobia, severe kidney disease, an internal defibrillator or pacemaker, an ear implant, some types of clips used on brain aneurysms, implanted spine stabilization rods, and weighing over 300 pounds.

The Future of Used MRI Equipment for Detecting Prostate Cancer

New studies have been conducted which show that used MRIs can be used for not only identifying prostate cancer, but also in determining if the cancer will return or even spread after treatment has already been given. Used MRIs can also be used to diagnose other problems with the prostate in addition to prostate cancer.

Used MRIs have many different uses, one of them being to detect prostate cancer in men. One of the benefits of used MRIs versus other imaging equipment for detecting prostate cancer is that there is no radiation exposure, which is believed to have harmful affects on people.
