Used CT Scanners in Hospital Emergency Rooms

Emergency rooms are operating used CT scanner more and more for patients that come in. It is important to note that there are benefits as well as drawbacks in regard to utilizing used CT scanner in emergency rooms.

Why Have Used CT Scanners in Emergency Rooms?

Used CT scanners can be advantageous for hospital emergency rooms. This equipment has been used on trauma patients and can help speed up the process of diagnosing a patient so that he or she can be treated and cared for more quickly.

Benefits of Used CT Scanners in Hospital Emergency Rooms

Used CT scannerss have been used more and more in emergency rooms of hospitals for a number of years. The equipment is readily available for doctors and nurses to use for a quick diagnosis in an emergency situation. Many radiologists view a test by a used CT scanner to be the test of choice for diagnosing many medical issues.

Drawbacks of Used CT Scanners in Hospital Emergency Rooms

There are a few possible issues involved with having a used CT scanner in a hospital emergency room. One major concern is the radiation exposure that is given off during the operation of equipment such as a used CT scanner. Exposure to radiation has many effects on people's health, such as the development of cancer, and even a person's appearance. The severity of the negative effects depends on the length of time of exposure as well as the strength of the radiation. It is still not confirmed whether or not used CT scanners in a hospital emergency room actually benefit the patients at all.

Cost of Used CT Scanners in a Hospital Emergency Room

It is very expensive for a person to have a test performed by a used CT scanner. Healthcare spending has dramatically increased over the years and therefore, spending per person has also increased. The number of patients receiving a test from a used CT scanner or MRI is one of the causes of the increase in healthcare spending.

Patients often go into an emergency room demanding that a certain type of test be performed on them, when it may not be necessary at all. Doctors should be the ones deciding whether or not a test such as one done with a used CT scanner is really going to help diagnosis the patient. Doctors sometimes perform the tests on the patients for fear of being sued if they do not use the equipment that is available in the hospital.

While used CT scanners can have many benefits as far as helping doctors and nurses properly diagnose patients, more research should be done on whether or not there are benefits to having the used CT scanners readily available in hospital emergency rooms. The drawbacks for having the used CT scanner in hospital emergency rooms are outweighing the benefits, cost and health risks being the most prevalent ones. Until further research is done, it may be best to keep used CT scanners out of hospital emergency rooms.
