Standard Procedures for Diagnostic Imaging Equipment in a Medical Facility

Diagnostic imaging equipment is used throughout the day in many large medical facilities on patients of all ages with all types of medical conditions. When it comes to the operation and functionality of the equipment, there are standard procedures that should be followed and rules to be adhered by everyone who will be using it. Learn about the operational procedures, safety procedures, and preparing equipment and patients for testing.

Operational Procedures for Diagnostic Imaging Equipment

Most types of diagnostic imaging equipment work differently so the require special training to operate each one. The professionals who are trained properly should know how each piece of machinery works and the safety procedures. Different training is required for each type of equipment. Some technicians go to school to train to operate a specific type of equipment such as sonograms, radiology, and ultrasound, to name a few.

Safety Procedures for Diagnostic Imaging Equipment

Medical facilities should always enforce the proper safety procedures when operating diagnostic imaging equipment. Not only are safety procedures in place to protect patients, but to protect the staff as well. Exposure to radiation that many of the machines give off can be very serious, especially if someone is exposed to high levels of radiation. The least amount of radiation possible should be used to get the image that is needed. Safety procedures should always be practiced by technicians for the safety of the patients as well as the technicians themselves.

Preparations

Before testing can occur on patients, the diagnostic imaging equipment needs to be prepared for use. The appropriate technicians for the equipment are responsible for preparing the equipment and understanding the exact specifications for the patient's scan from the physician. The technician also has to know what positions the patient should be in so that the right images are taken to come up with a diagnosis.

Preparing Patients for Testing

When patients need to have a test done with diagnostic imaging equipment, the physician will decide what test or tests the patient needs. Some tests require patients to follow specific instructions beforehand, such as adherence to certain dietary restrictions for a few hours before the test and removal of jewelry and any articles of clothing that have metal of any kind on it. Some imaging equipment does not require any preparations beforehand from patients.
