Children and Diagnostic Imaging Equipment

Special procedures and precautions should be taken when diagnostic imaging equipment is used for children. When children need tests using diagnostic imaging equipment they are probably very scared so the proper steps should be taken to set them at ease during the process. Some tests such as an X-ray or an ultrasound require little to no prepping time and are not uncomfortable. Other tests require strict preparations and it is important that children are set at ease during the process.

Diagnostic Imaging Equipment for Children

Because children's bodies are smaller than adults, special diagnostic imaging equipment is sometimes needed. Advanced technology is needed in order to examine the smaller bones and body parts of children. The results from the test produce images with greater clarity for an accurate diagnosis. Rather than use older CT scanners a spiral, or helical, CT scanner is used which is faster.

Preparing a Child for Tests Using Diagnostic Imaging Equipment

Always let the doctor know if the child has any allergies or is taking any medications, as this may affect some of the prepping procedures for the test using diagnostic imaging equipment. If the child is going to be put to sleep for a CT scan or MRI then there are specifications on what the child can and cannot eat and drink before the test. Check with the child's doctor beforehand. Children should not eat any solid foods for six hours before the test is performed, but children can have clear liquids up until two hours before the test. Two hours before the test is when no food or drinks can be given to the child. However, note that if the test is for the abdomen or hips then the child cannot eat or drink for six hours before the test. Make sure the doctor gives clear instructions on the eating and drinking procedures so that the test does not have to be rescheduled.

A test using diagnostic imaging equipment such as an MRI uses a strong magnet. Therefore, the child should not be dressed in anything that has metal on it, such as zippers or buttons. Remove all jewelry or hair barrettes that contain metal.

Setting a Child at Ease for a Test Using Diagnostic Imaging Equipment

Set children at ease before the test and explain what the experience will be like. If you can, choose a doctor that the child trusts and is comfortable with. While children should not feel pain during these tests using diagnostic imaging equipment, having to remain still for a few minutes may cause some discomfort for the child. If the child feels any discomfort during any test they should let the technician know right away. Sometimes a parent can be in the room during a test using diagnostic imaging equipment. The parent may have to wear a lead apron to prevent exposure to radiation.
